Fencer-Arminius Hasemann 1939 # 3274
Wartime Bronzed Zinc Cast Sculpture of a German Fencer by Arminius Hasemann 1939.. This is a very rare sculpture by Arminius Hasemann (1888-1979) Hasemann became a Nazi party member in 1932 and produced only a few works during this period. His remaining bronze sculptures were melted down in 1940 as part of the metal collection drives toward the German war effort. This example likely survives because it was not cast in bronze, which was forbidden after the war started in 1939. The bronze finish, cast zinc figure is a fully outfitted fencer with helmet and foil, pulling up a gauntlet. The figure is very powerful and stands about 17" tall, including the marble base. Marble is excellent with no chips or repairs. The condition of the metal is excellent, though there are some rubs here and there to the patinated finish, which do not detract. A really great sculpture.
