Flötenspielerin (Flute Player) # 874

Flötenspielerin (Flute Player) sculpture by Freudenstadt sculptor David Fahrner. (1895-1962) This lovely figure of a nude woman playing a flute was sculpted in 1941. It was exhibited in the Haus der Deutschen Kunst exhibition in Munich the following year. It appears in the catalog as  exhibit number 256. The quality of the modeling is exceptional. The influence of Josef Thorak and Georg Kolbe is quite evident. The sculpture appears in every way a bronze, but it is actually bronze clad. This process used a thin copper sheet tightly contoured around a core of plaster or similar material. This was not to save money, but to comply with wartime restrictions of metal usage. This sculpture was probably never cast in bronze. The piece stands just over 14" tall and is in excellent condition, with no damage or repairs. It retains all of its original dark patina.  It is signed FAHRNER 1941. (**After September of 1939, bronze casting was illegal in Germany, all copper being needed for war materiel.
