Figural Bronze of Adolf Hitler in Mercedes Benz Staff Car, dated
14.III.1938 Wien by Emil Otto Krieger (1902-1979).
This cast bronze figure measures just over 15" tall and shows Adolf Hitler
in his overcoat and political visor cap saluting as he enters the city of
Vienna in his Mercedes Benz Staff Car. Inscised in the bronze below the
windshield is~ 14.III.1938 Wien, the day Hitler entered into Vienna after the
Anschluss. The bronze has a chocolate brown patina, is well-modeled, and
has good facial details. Nice quality cast, typical of the period. The
sculptors initials are incised on the lower right side. This may well be a
unique cast, as there have been no others surface. It was said that the
bronze was brought back to England by a British officer at the end of the war.
Emil Krieger passed his technical training at the Meisterschule in
Kaiserslautern. From 1921 he attended the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich. His
teachers were Richard Riemerschmid, Adolf Schinnerer, and Julius Diez. From 1924
to 1931 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he was a
masterclass with Josef Wackerle. In 1928 he had his first exhibition in the
Munich Glass Palace. In 1936 Krieger received the Rompreis. From 1946 to 1977
he held a Lehrauftrag for nude drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts in
Munich. In 1971 he received the Schwabinger Kunstpreis.
