Frederick The Great- Alte Fritz ( Reich Dedication ) # 1868
Standing silver plated figure of Frederick the Great in uniform. This figure was
presented in 1940 as a 40-year anniversary gift to an employee in the Dresden
Finance Office by co-workers. The figure is white metal with a silver plate. It
measures 12 1/2" tall and is in excellent, undamaged condition still complete
with his walking stick and sword. The base is hand-engraved in script. It
reads: Zum 40 jährigen
Dienstjubiläum
~ Gewidmet v.d. Gefolgschaft b. Finanzamt Dresden-Annenstrasse ~ 19.4.1940.
Fritz has got to be one of the most interesting fellows in history and his likeness is utilized to this day and he can be found just about everywhere, dating a piece to the Reich is difficult at best. Hitler is said to have traveled with two photo's, his mother Clara and Frederick the Great and when you look at him as an historical figure it is not too difficult to understand why. If you take the time to do some reading you will find that he is almost a model for everything Hitler tried to be, some of it successfully for a time but ultimately he fails to meet the bar historically.
I remember back in 2004 when Der Untergang was released and the American collectors were in sheer dread that the German's were doing a movie about Adolf Hitler, a scary premise as they just cant seem to get it right. I made a mad dash on the opening into a little cultural epicenter where they actually showed foreign movies instead of the horrific Hollywood bullshit that is constantly pushed off on Americans in order to keep them dumb as stumps.
The movie other than some minor flaws turned out to be fairly good and for the most part interesting and opens with a Traudl Junge interview where she discusses the Third Reich and her part as Hitler's secretary. From there it falls into the last days of the war in the bunker with some typical stereotypes such as a Goebbels cast for his likeness, and I am not sure how they got there but Eva the wholesome German mistress of Adolf is played off as something of a slut. Casting an actor that could play Hitler is another matter and they did manage to get a guy that could do a decent job of it in Bruno Ganz, did not think it would be possible personally.
In one scene Hitler is sitting at his desk while the artillery shells land overhead looking up at a photo of Fritz and commenting woefully that his own problems are of no consequence compared to Frederick's. Its a good scene and probably not far from the truth as Adolf was a great admirer of Frederick the Great, finding good period examples from the era of the 3rd Reich are another matter and this one is one of the nicest I have seen with its very typical silver wash and dedication from 1940.
