Large Scale Reich Adler in Bronze- Kurt Schmid Ehmen ( Original Cast ) # 2062

If you have never seen an original Ehmen Adler of the 3rd Reich period, don't feel bad as they do not really exist and I am aware of two here in the states of which this is one and a 3rd example was observed in Europe several years ago but it was beaten and battered. The most commonly encountered example of these is what is referred to as the " Estate Cast ". The estate casts which were done off of the original molds of the period by Hetty Schmid-Ehmen after her husbands death and bear corresponding paperwork dated to 1983 were a limited run for family and after which the molds were destroyed. The estate cast molds must have been damaged at some time between the period and the time they were recast, this is important to note as it leaves flaws that are not present on original birds, and also makes the estate cast identifiable as such and in addition to the cast itself along with a couple minor differences that are utilized for purposes of authentication of an estate cast.

Its also worth noting that a scan of the search engines for Prof. Ehmen will allow you a lot of information on the man and his importance during the 3rd Reich, his personal relationships with Troost and Hitler, his design of the famous Nuremberg Rally Ground Reich Adlers, as well as the Feldherrnhalle memorial of the fallen of 9 Nov. 1923, the latter being most significant.

The bonus material that can be found  is the wide array of fake or spurious Ehmen eagles offered by dealers that recast off recasts and even piecemeal pieces that never existed and offer them to collectors as original birds. The reason I mention this and the reason it is important and relevant is that the average collector and even the advanced collector in many cases add pieces such as this as add on's or enhancements to their collection and do not specialize in these area's and this leaves them vulnerable to scoundrels offering bogus pieces for numbers as low as 3500.00. Don't be fooled.

Kurt Schmid-Ehmen was the bird man, original pieces attributed to him are most desirable and they are extremely rare. To my knowledge and recollection I have never seen an original model of this bird offered at auction or anywhere for that matter and this example resided in a private collection based in Germany started in the 1950's and was purchased from that collection in the early 1980's and has resided here in the U.S since that time.

The example offered here stands approx. 18 inches in height overall, the Adler stands just over 10 inches and the wingspan just shy of 10 inches. It weighs in at almost 30 pounds and is properly signed with the K.S.E Reich period marking for Kurt Schmid-Ehmen and is massive in appearance. It is cast in bronze with a dark patina showing an honest and attractive wear from handling and age, it also sits on its original period base. A rare opportunity to obtain a significant piece for your collection and a piece that really never comes to market. Bronze is hard to photograph and this piece was no different, as a rule of thumb the piece is always better than my photographs and I get that comment all the time.

As a side note I often see whiners on the web complaining about P.O.R pricing. I utilize P.O.R quite a bit here for various reasons, most commonly I use it because my offerings are not common and I do not like to educate dealers who take the numbers and use them as a spring board and I have used it on 300.00 items and I have used it on items that price higher. It is not my job to educate market dealers and to give shoppers information to use against myself or others in the future, so tough boogers. I can tell you that fakes are offered at 3500.00 and estate casts run can break 5 figures, so if you take that information and account for an original specimen feel free to contact me and always happy to discuss pricing and options and I can be quite reasonable and accommodating in most cases.
