Ehrenpreis DLV 1935 Cigarette/ Cigar Box # 1989

In an official snub to the Treaty of Versailles Adolf Hitler orders Hermann Goering to establish the Luftwaffe in February 1935. Previously known as the DLV or Deutscher Luftsportverband and headed by Ernst Udet, most notable as a WWII fighter pilot and flying ace. The insignia of the DLV is initially adopted by the Luftwaffe and the German air force essentially comes out of the closet.

Throughout 1935 there are a series of flights and tests and without a month its hard to pin this piece down other than the flight involves Berlin as it is shown in different font on the engraved map above the presentation. The box is an Ehrenpreis for German flight in 1935 and is cedar lined and original inclusive of an adjustable center divider. Being 80 years old I am actually surprised at how well the piece held up and other than a missing slat to the upper left corner of the upper lid, its essentially complete.

In typical German style the box is of very high quality with one single full length piano hinged top, lined in cedar with a beautiful engraved map of Germany and the insignia of the DLV over the prize dedication for German Flight 1935. Whoever got this piece must have been pleased. Manufactured of .800 silver and hallmarked with a maker i have yet to pin down measures approx 7 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 1 1/2. The base is a black/blue leather framed in by silver and shows its age but is also fairly typical of what you like to see.

If your a Luftwaffe guy or like high end German silver, this is a really nice piece either for an accent to dagger, or as a stand alone piece for display.
