Bronze Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg- Ludwig Manzel (1916) # 1144

It is not often that I have the opportunity to grab a piece like this and many Hindenburg pieces show him in standard clothes or uniform, this example has him in full Field Marshal uniform with baton and sword. It has to be one of the finest pieces I have had the opportunity to own and the detail is exceptional.

The fact that it is a commissioned piece, signed, and numbered just adds to the desirability when looking for bronze with numbered examples meaning very low production.

This particular bronze sculpture of Hindenburg stands at 20 inches high and is solid bronze. The piece was commissioned by his staff as a gift to the the Hindenburg family for his military anniversary by the well know artist, and at the the time of the commission of this piece the President of the Prussian Academy of Arts Ludwig Manzel.

Foundry marked Noack Berlin-Friedenau, signed by Manzel and numbered "3" the piece is noted in a period article dating to April 7, 1916 with one being presented to Hindenburg. The text in its original form and the translation are as follows:

Hindenburgfeier im Hauptquartier Ost

Hauptquartier Ost, 7. April 1916.

"Hindenburg Celebration in Supreme Headquarters East."

"The golden military anniversary of Field Marshall von Hindenburg was celebrated today by the staff of the Supreme Commander with a modest celebratory act in which the Field Marshall was presented a statuette  by professor Manzell of the Field Marshall for his family. At the celebratory breakfast the Field Marshall made a toast to the highest military commanders in which he said: 'I can only wish to each of you, as has been allowed to me, that he will be as fortunate to look back and be at peace with the past as I. And if I may, I thank my highest military commanders for their favor that has made it possible for me, in years of progress in concert with you, to bring about once more as in the old days, the supremacy of the Fatherland, to draw the sword and, God willing, to cast down the enemy. We all serve this high Master and, should it be necessary, I know the inspiration is upon each of us to pledge blood and life.'"
