Signed Third Reich era bronze group, Wirtschaft und Arbeit, by
Wilhelm August Goebel. A.W.Goebel was a modeler for many of the top
German porcelain factories. His bronzes, however are quite scarce,
especially from the Nazi era. The bronze is mounted on its original pink
variegated marble base, and the overall height is 24 1/2". Modeling is
top quality. The allegorical figures represent labor and management as
equal partners. Blatantly propagandistic and ironic, as it was created
at the time Hitler and the Nazi regime were systematically dismantling
and outlawing labor unions in Germany. There are some rubs to the patina
on the top of the heads, but overall the finish is excellent and
original. Signed in script in the bronze base, and foundry marked, D.B.
(Duesseldorf Bildgiesserei) on the edge of the base. A large and
impressive sculpture.
